MODULE 2 - CAREER AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Welcome to the Career and Professional Development Module. RVU advisement is divided into two different specialties: Academic Support and Career & Professional Development. You will be utilizing both services as you go through school. You just met your Educational Learning Specialists —now let’s meet your Career and Professional Development Counselors!

Jeddie Herndon and Madison Tarleton are here to support you in a variety of ways, including helping you explore your medical career opportunities, creating an ePortfolio, fine-tuning your CV, and much more! Also, be sure to take notes as you go through the information, including responding to the reflection questions. Your responses to these questions may be used during Orientation and also during individual advising appointments.

Why Personal and Professional Development Matters

One of the most important decisions you will make during medical is which specialty to choose. Many factors go into this decision: your personal history, your values and interests, your strengths and areas of improvement, your experience during rotations, the duration of the training involved, and financial/lifestyle considerations. The more you know and understand yourself, the easier the decision will be; therefore, your “personal development" is an integral and important part of your “professional development” as an aspiring healthcare professional. The difference is that the development of the person begins before the development of the professional.

Professional development is not merely about increasing skillsets or refining specializations. The most effective, inspiring, and celebrated professionals (and leaders!) are individuals who continue to make their personal development primary and see it as essential to their professional excellence. These professionals know that being willing to grow and explore outside their comfort zones in many areas of their lives enhances their ability to innovate, increases their overall potency within their chosen field, and enriches their living.

The aim of personal and professional development is to help you manage your own learning and growth throughout your career! Take a couple of minutes to watch one of our Career Peer Coaches talk about their own personal and professional development.

Now that you've watched the video, please write down your answers to these questions:

  • How would you describe yourself to a person you just met?  How have you come to know these things about yourself?
  • Write three characteristics and three competencies you want to develop during medical school?

Self-Assessment

Your Career Counselor(s) will be utilizing various self-assessment tools to help you identify your skills, strengths, values, interests, and preferences in order to determine what careers in medicine are of interest and would be a good fit.

These tools will not tell you what career is the perfect match, but they will help you gain insight about yourself so that you can articulate what is important to you, focus your job search, and assist you in evaluating options.

Your first two years will be spent exploring specialty options and learning about yourself. We want you to discover what kind of a physician you want to become.

What are your values and strengths?

How do they fit in with different specialties?

One tool we will use during medical school is the Careers in Medicine Assessments. You'll get access after starting medical school and be able to take the assessments as many times as you like.

Congratulations on completing the Career and Development module!!!

Here are your next steps:

  • Save the questions to your answers in an accessible place because you may discuss them with the Career Peer Coaches and will also review them with your Career and Professional Development Counselors.
  • Enjoy your Summer before medical school!
  • Attend Orientation. See you there!

How do you plan to demonstrate a commitment to yourself and your peers during coursework?
I truly believe the more people lift each other up the better the community does. I plan on not only committing time for myself to fully understand the concepts but to aid and assist other students when I can and ask for help from my peers. Leaning on one another develops a strong healthy community of trust and integrity.
How do you plan to think about and engage with DEI initiatives during medical school? Being a lesbian, I would love to work closely and learn from other LGBTQIA students and faculty. I also am eager to continue learning about micro-aggresions and active steps to combat racism in the medical field, specifically towards woman of color seeking medical help.
What are you looking forward to in your Medical Career journey? I am looking forward to the classes and concepts we will be learning and to grow into a strong and capable medical professional that honors individual differences and continually shows compassion.
What are you interested in learning about Career Development? I am eager to lean into and learn more about what skills I am great at and how to apply them to my future and what direction that leads me towards.

How do you plan to demonstrate a commitment to yourself and your peers during coursework? The plan is to show up and actively participate within the group. Being able to potentially form relationships and groups to work together towards the common end goal of getting into medical school. Additionally, understanding that sometimes it’s ok to ask for help, have some grace, and continue on.
How do you plan to think about and engage with DEI initiatives during medical school?I plan to be open to the variety of opportunities that come my way to learn about others and their backgrounds. It takes all kinds of kinds, and there is so much out there that one could learn.
What are you looking forward to in your Medical Career journey?
As cliché as this sounds the overall ride. Again, there are many people out there that we will get to come across. Meaning that we will have the opportunity to learn and observe from many. I hope to be open about the process so that I can gain all that this journey has to offer. To hopefully impact others to do the same or even to be able better the care that one day I will provide.
What are you interested in learning about Career Development?
I am interested in learning about all of the different specialties. Being able to work with an advisor of sorts will be a great asset to have. The idea of having someone there to answer questions that you won’t know to ask till you get there type of thing is definitely reassuring.

To my peers, I aim to interact with them in study groups and offer support in a collaborative environment. To engage with DEI Initiatives, I would want to be as involved in activities as possible that I have never previously participated in. I am looking to grow as an individual not just proficient in knowledge, but as an individual self-aware of their strengths and weaknesses, which can help me navigate through the journey of medical school. In career development, I am eager to learn of the various opportunities and avenues that I can pursue in addition to being a clinician.

How do you plan to demonstrate a commitment to yourself and your peers during coursework?

I plan on maintaining a rigorous study schedule and a positive attitude throughout the year. I want to build close connections with my professors and deep friendships with my classmates. By immersing myself in the RVU community, I hope to learn and grow along with my classmates. I understand that my success will be determined by implementing “higher-level” learning techniques mentioned in the book “Make it Stick”. My goal this year is to really use those techniques in achieving my goals.

That being said, I promise to balance the demanding schedule of the program with routine exercise and a healthy diet. I must always make time to bond with my wife, as her support is crucial to my success.

In regards to my peers, I promise to be an example inside the classroom and outside the classroom. I will be a person that encourages and uplifts my classmates. I hope to share my knowledge and experiences with them, while learning as much as possible from them as well. I look forward to the late nights studying together.

How do you plan to think about and engage with DEI initiatives during medical school?

I plan on forging friendships and close bonds with people of all backgrounds. In fact, someone’s ethnicity or religion does not impact my willingness to be empathetic or uplifting. I’ll be happy to take part in any DEI initiative that permits my classmates to feel comfortable. Being aware of my behavior and being open minded will be crucial in maintaining this initiative.

What are you looking forward to in your Medical Career journey?

I’m looking forward to learning as much as possible and absorbing all the lessons I possibly can. I’m passionate about learning human anatomy and engaging in community service. I can’t wait to start that journey from scratch. My hope is to realize my specialty by my third year.

I’m also excited about meeting new people and building close friendships with professors and students. My main goal is to be accepted into the wilderness medicine tract where I can tailor my skills to practicing medicine under difficult conditions.

What are you interested in learning about Career Development?

I’m very excited to work with the counselors here at RVU to navigate the journey into my career. I want to utilize all the resources available to me through the school and I plan on taking any advice given to me very seriously. I want to be made aware of the various avenues and paths into medicine that go beyond my limited understanding.

In my medical journey, I would like to take advantage of everything that my professors and peers can offer. I was to soak as much in as I can. I really look forward to building new relationships and expanding my passion with people who also share a passion for medicine.

I think this is a big piece that is a part of the long journey to being a physician, finding what specialty or program that you fit into. I am excited to work with counselors who can help guide me and show me different paths that maybe I have not heard of.

  • As an incoming MSBS student, one of the facets of the program I was introduced to was the preparedness of the graduating class for medical school. My goal in joining this program is to absorb as much information from faculty and alumni as possible, and approach medical school with a confident outlook. Through the last couple of gap years in clinical work, I realized how important a collaborative effort is for successful outcomes. During the program, engaging in team-based projects with open communication and accountability is one way I will commit myself to my peers.
  • After learning about the SGA DEI Task Force and their initiatives, I have developed a keen interest in actively participating in their discussions. The events and presentations they organize offer valuable information that could benefit me as a future healthcare professional. I see great value in engaging with their efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the medical community.
  • What excites me the most for the next couple of years at RVU are the people. Learning from the experienced alumni of the MSBS program, medical students, and faculty members who have all navigated this journey before will undoubtedly contribute to making my own experience successful. Their wealth of knowledge and guidance will be invaluable in shaping my academic and personal growth during this time.
  • I look forward to the tools and assessments provided by the career development office to help me choose a medical specialty. Right now, I’m interested in so many options, but with their help, I hope to narrow down my career choices and get a clearer picture of what I want to pursue.

How do you plan to demonstrate a commitment to yourself and your peers during coursework? I plan to commit to continuing to engage in my hobbies despite being busy with school. I plan to rock climb with friends at least once a month and to work on art projects during free time. I will demonstrate a commitment to my peers by continuing to display kindness despite the stress that school will place on me.
How do you plan to think about and engage with DEI initiatives during medical school? I plan to continuously think about how my actions impact others and make others feel included. I also look forward to learning about my fellow students backgrounds and cultural differences.
What are you looking forward to in your Medical Career journey?
I am looking forward to learning more about not only medicine, but myself as well. I am excited to see what specialities I love. I have always had interests in specific specialities, but I am very curious to see what I enjoy while immersed in the field during rotations.
What are you interested in learning about Career Development?
I am interested in learning how to continuously develop my career outside of medical school. I would like to constantly keep up with new discoveries and information and apply that to my career. I do not want to be “stuck in my ways” as I get older as a physician, and would like to learn how to constantly incorporate new information into my practice.
