Ethics, Perspectives, & Advocacy

Ethics

Ethics papers will present multiple perspectives on a moral issue or ethical dilemma.  It should focus on issues of concern—whether that concern is philosophical or moral. A successful ethics essay will present a balanced exploration of the topic based on research.  Authors should avoid emotionally charged language and biased statements.  The goal of an ethics paper is to write an organized, logical, and compelling essay that informs the reader of different considerations and guides decision-making based on identified values of the person or organization.

Perspectives

Perspectives papers will address one or several recently published papers or current research of interest.  An author’s perspective should shed light on the key findings in the research. Writing should be clear and concise and propose a new and unique viewpoint on existing problems/events/research. The aim of the perspective essay is to elucidate the conclusions of current research and may propose areas of further study or challenge these conclusions.

Advocacy

Advocacy papers will aim to gain support or interest from readers regarding a specific belief or cause.  These essays may serve as a call-to-action or simply raise awareness surrounding social issues/current events. The essay should summarize an issue and offer a specific stance/recommendation on how to address an existing policy founded on research/best practices.  A successful advocacy paper will contain an introduction, background, analysis, and recommendations and will include relevant sources.
