MODULE 4 - STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

We are beyond excited to welcome you to RVU. We have the utmost honor of serving as your guides and crafting an educational and empowering start to your medical school journey. Along with the support of the Student Affairs team, Orientation Leaders, and Peer Mentors, we are energized to introduce you to your curriculum, your career, your peers, and most importantly, the faculty and staff who will be with you every step of the way. Your experience for the next four years is truly what you make of it.

As the Directors of Student Life, Zeerak Haider (Colorado), and Vie Van Noy (Southern Utah), we will open the door of opportunity to leadership roles, such as SGA, Class Council, and various student organizations. We also intend to provide several opportunities for you to engage with the RVU community and redirect your focus on your health and wellness. The opportunities you choose will define your experience and your future role as a healthcare professional.

We look forward to meeting each and every one of you. Until then, we have designed this module as a blockbuster preview for all that is to come. We hope you devour each part of this module and leave wanting more!

Leadership Opportunities

Student Affairs provides the structure and foundation to support our students in leadership roles.

  • Student Government Association (SGA)
The SGA is the official governing body for all students at Rocky Vista University. Responsibilities of the SGA include collecting and expressing student opinions, acting as a liaison between the student body and the administration, supporting organization and class activities, and working to improve the quality of life for all students at RVU.

The SGA is composed of the following officers: elected officers from the COM, Class Council Presidents from all programs, Diversity and Inclusion Officers, and the Honor Code President.

  • Class Councils
Representing each Class are officers that serve on the Class Council. Student leaders for each program are elected into office in the fall semester. Class Councils pride themselves on building a strong student community and increasing collegiality amongst their peers. Service projects, traditions, and participating in the improvement of the RVU community locally and nationally is at the forefront of the goals that Class Councils have accomplished in the past.

Clubs and Organizations

Engagement in clubs and organizations at RVU is, by far, going to be one of the most fruitful investments of your time. It is through your participation in clubs and organizations that your mind will be introduced to experiences and knowledge that will go beyond your curriculum. This is where you are in the driver’s seat: you make the decisions to explore topics that pique your curiosity, listen to inspiring speakers, and gain skills—such as suturing, public speaking, and even learning how to deliver babies through simulation events. Participation in clubs and organizations is like an invite to a party that you don’t want to miss; except in this party, you leave with a clear mind and refinement of your personal and professional development. Volunteer Opportunities

There are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities at RVU and some of them qualify for TOUCH (Translating Osteopathic Understanding into Community Health) Hours.  Check out the video prepared by your SGA Vice Presidents for more details!

What are the various leadership roles on campus and who can you consult with to learn about these opportunities in detail? Why is it important to be involved?Zeerak is the director of student life, they can help answer questions about leadership roles, SGA, Class Council, and other organizations. It is important to get involved for so many reasons. For me, I find it a good way to meet new people and a way of giving back to the school that you are attending. Helping your fellow students by listening to them and being their voice. Being in a leadership role can look different for everyone, but it is a necessity.

There is student government, clubs, etc. as places to participate in leadership roles. Being involved is a great thing for everyone to do just for personal involvement…but I think it also helps with distinguishing us during our own professional development.

Student Government Association and Class Council. Contact the Directors of Student Life from the associated campus for discussion about these details!

It is important to be involved to gain an understanding and sense of community that revolves around you. These individuals (peers, professors, community members) all are unique and being able to understand diversity at all stages — whether it’s age, gender, sex, ethnicity, race, culture, food, etc is very important as a future physician who will care for a diverse group of patients and their families/loved ones.

I think it is important to be involved because it’s important to give back. Getting involved may also teach us leadership and other various skills that we will need as physicians.

Students can get involved with leadership within any club or activity, but can also play a role within Student government or class counsel. I could consult with Zeerak Haider regarding the various opportunities RVU offers. It is important to be involved in order to feel a part of the RVU community: as well as the community of Parker if you do volunteering! It is also a great way to get closer with classmates and have experiences outside of the normal school curriculum.

There are leadership opportunities in SGA and Class Councils. At the Southern Utah campus, I can reach out to the director of student life, Vie Van Noy. Involvement will help with student wellness and will also look good on our CVs for future residency applications.

Vie Van Noy is the director of student life for the RVU Utah campus. She is the person I will contact to get more information about becoming involved with leadership roles on campus such as Student Government Associations, Class Councils as well as leadership opportunities offered for other student organizations. Engaging in the school’s community is going to define my experience at RVU and my future role as a physician. Without student organizations there is a lack of social wellness which is very important for my overall wellness and success as a medical school student. Finally, building a home away from home and making connections with my peers is what I hope to achieve when signing up for student organizations.

There are several opportunities to participate in leadership roles on campus, including positions in student government as well as class councils. To learn more about leadership opportunities, students can contact the student affairs team, orientation leaders, and peer mentors, or the organizations themselves. It is very important to be involved, not only because this gives back to the school and allows you to engage with fellow students to work to make this experience the best it can be, but it also allows you to build your resume for residency applications, where leadership positions can help you stand-out.

Some of the leadership roles include SGA, class council, inclusion and diversity officers, and I can consult with the leaders or members of those groups as well as those in clubs and other organizations to get better details about the opportunities they have to offer. It’s important to be involved because it helps you get a better idea of the community and environment surrounding you as well as make friends, and connect better to the people within the school environment to ensure better success and support through the course of the years.

There are various leadership roles on campus such as being involved with clubs, SGA, or class councils. Student Affairs can be consulted to learn about these opportunities in greater detail.

Being involved is important for numerous reasons such as it allows you to pursue activities outside of the classroom, develop leadership skills, make personal connections with classmates and community members, and allow for additional learning and personal development.
