MODULE 4 - STUDENT INVOLVEMENT
We are beyond excited to welcome you to RVU. We have the utmost honor of serving as your guides and crafting an educational and empowering start to your medical school journey. Along with the support of the Student Affairs team, Orientation Leaders, and Student Ambassadors, we are energized to introduce you to your curriculum, your career, your peers, and most importantly, the faculty and staff who will be with you every step of the way. Your experience for the next nine months is truly what you make of it.
As the Directors of Student Life, Zeerak Haider (Colorado), and Vie Van Noy (Southern Utah), we will open the door of opportunity to leadership roles, such as SGA, Class Council, and various student organizations. We also intend to provide several opportunities for you to engage with the RVU community and redirect your focus on your health and wellness. The opportunities you choose will define your experience and your future role as a healthcare professional.
We look forward to meeting each and every one of you. Until then, we have designed this module as a blockbuster preview for all that is to come. We hope you devour each part of this module and leave wanting more!
Leadership Opportunities
Student Affairs provides the structure and foundation to support our students in leadership roles.
- Student Government Association (SGA)
The SGA is the official governing body for all students at Rocky Vista University. Responsibilities of the SGA include collecting and expressing student opinions, acting as a liaison between the student body and the administration, supporting organization and class activities, and working to improve the quality of life for all students at RVU.The SGA is composed of the following officers: elected officers from the COM, Class Council Presidents from all programs, Diversity and Inclusion Officers, and the Honor Code President.
- Class Councils
Representing each Class are officers that serve on the Class Council. Student leaders for each program are elected into office in the fall semester. Class Councils pride themselves on building a strong student community and increasing collegiality amongst their peers. Service projects, traditions, and participating in the improvement of the RVU community locally and nationally is at the forefront of the goals that Class Councils have accomplished in the past.

There are numerous of different leadership roles including SGA, class council but also within different clubs on campus. Speaking with different students involved in the organizations is a great way to learn about the opportunities.
Why is it important to be involved?
Getting involved in campus life help connect the community and create meaningful relationships that extend past the walls of the classroom. Having more support from peers and faculty can only improve ones overall experience and energy around school and the difficulties of the curriculum.
What are the various leadership roles on campus and who can you consult with to learn about these opportunities in detail? There are several student government entities on campus, such as, SGA/Class Councils/DEI/Other clubs. I can consult Vie, the director of student life from the Utah campus and discuss ways to be better involved.
Why is it important to be involved?It gives way to being a part of some sort of community. Going through this program we are going to learn a lot about service and diversity. Being able to play a role and have a potential impact on others is at the end of the day some of the biggest facets that will come with being a physician.
1) Leadership roles are in the form of student associations/interest groups, student council. One can reach out to student affairs to inquire further.
2) Being involved shows a desire and commitment to contribute to the community in a meaningful way.

Why is it important to be involved?Being involved as a student on campus is beneficial because it helps us find community on campus. There are a plethora of opportunities to network, build rapport, and find a passion within an organization of our choice which could be advantageous as a future health professional.

It is important to be involved as it creates new relationships and experiences that otherwise you would miss out on.

There are several different leadership roles on campus such as the SGA which includes class council presidents, diversity and inclusion officers and honor code president. To learn more about getting involved in these roles we can reach out to the directors of student life of our campus.
Why is it important to be involved?
It is important to get involved because it allows you an opportunity to be involved in your community, network with other students and faculty as well as learn leadership skills and gain valuable experience.

There are lots of leadership roles available on campus through SGA, class councils, and clubs. To find out more about these roles, we can go to student affairs or our director of student life.
Why is it important to be involved?Getting involved is a great way to build connections with our community and among ourselves.
Student Government Association offers several positions of leadership from honor code president to diversity and inclusion officers, class council, and elected officers from the COM program. Class council consists of elected representatives from each class to serve in projects and traditions. The best place to learn about how to apply for these organizations is from your directors of student life. In southern Utah, it is Vie Van Noy.
For me, it’s important to be involved in these things because it provides a great net work with your peers and with faculty at the school. And it also gives you the ability to learn new skills and how to be in leadership positions as well as serve others.

A student can be elected to positions in the SGA or in various class councils. Leadership roles include class council presidents, honor code presidents and diversity and inclusion officers.
Why is it important to be involved?
Being involved in the wider RVU community is essential for many reasons. Firstly, it’s a welcome break from the rigorous course schedule. Alternatively, being involved allows us to grow our networks and develop professionally, as well as allowing us to make new friends and improve our community.

I believe it is important to be involved within these organization is because you create a community that wants to work together to make a difference.

It is important to be involved because it’s a way to get to know other people on campus while also improving team skills
What are the various leadership roles on campus and who can you consult with to learn about these opportunities in detail? Student societies, Student Government Association, Student Council, etc. According to a recent email I received, Daphne and Vie are the current directors of Student Life.
Why is it important to be involved?These resources can provide additional insights and networking opportunities, especially for individuals like me, who have no member of my family or my spouse’s family that are in the medical field. These opportunities will provide valuable advice from insiders and individuals who have similar aspirations as mine and can point the way for a smooth rise while navigating medical school, rotations, and residency.

It is important to be involved because it is a way to connect and learn about fellow classmates and to also express who you are as a person. This will help you form a good support system that you can take with you through medical school. Also, it is very important to be involved in the community around you so you can better understand and connect to the people that make up that community.

There are several leadership roles in the student government association and student councils. Students can discuss these roles with the Office of Student Life to learn more about them.
Why is it important to be involved?I think it’s important for the students to become part of the RVU community. Through leadership roles, we are able to communicate and learn student opinions, network ,and learn leadership skills.
RVU offers students various leadership opportunities including the Class Council, Student Government Association, and a number of different student-led organizations. To learn more about these opportunities students can contact the Directors of Student Life, Zeerak Haider (Colorado) and Vie Van Noy (Southern Utah), and our peer mentors. Finally, being involved is important because simply this journey cannot be completed alone. We will need our peers, professors, staff, and community to achieve our goals in medicine. Therefore getting involved facilitates connections to form and promotes DEI.
The leadership roles on campus that come to mind are the student government association and the Class Council. The Director of Student Life (For CO, it is Zeerak Haider) is the point of contact for learning about these and other opportunities. Involvement fosters a sense of belonging and can fortify oneself against internal and external stressors. As stressful as the MSBS and DO programs can be, it will be important to counter that stress with the social strength that comes from being a part of the RVU community.

Leadership roles can be found in research, clubs and students organization, and even study groups. There are both traditional and nontraditional leadership roles one can take so don’t be afraid to think outside of the box or even forge a new path!
It’s important to be involved to expose yourself to different ways of thinking. This will aid in making you a well-rounded, empathetic, dimensional-thinking individual. Involvement helps sharpen interpersonal skills and aids in bolstering community ties.

RVU has numerous leadership opportunities available to students such as the student government association, class councils and other student organizations. In order to learn more about these opportunities we are able to reach out to student affairs.
Why is it important to be involved?It is important to become involved because this provides students with an opportunity to network, build relationships and foster leadership and teamwork skills that will benefit them throughout their careers.

Why is it important to be involved?Involvement opens the door to new experiences and opportunities that can widen perspective and can allow us to be more in-tune with the community around us.
There are various leadership positions within SGA and the class council. To learn more about these positions you can consult with the director of student life. It is important to be involved to meet new people, for overall wellbeing, and to have a sense of inclusivity with other people.
There’s so many different leadership roles in SGA and class councils that are offered. You can consult student affairs to learn more from what I understand. It is important to be involved because it’s truthfully just a healthy habit to get to know others on campus. It is healthy to unwind and do other things, meet new people, and try new things.
The leadership roles at RVU are the SGA, elected members of the various class councils, the DEI officers and members of the honor code organization. If we want to get our foot in the door with these organizations, we can meet with our respective director of student life!Developing leadership skills early in your medical career by participating in specific school organizations can greatly contribute to your journey towards becoming an exceptional medical professional.
Zeerak is the director of student life, they can help answer questions about leadership roles, SGA, Class Council, and other organizations. It is important to get involved for so many reasons. For me I find it a good way to meet new people and a way of giving back to the school that you are attending. Helping your fellow students by listening to them and being their voice. Being in a leadership role can look different for everyone, but it is a necessity.

Why is it important to be involved? It is important to be involved in both the community and school life in order to learn more about the place you spend the majority of your time. Learning more about those that work or attend your school will not only help you feel more connected but will help others feel connected as well. It is also important to be involved in your community as you can make a difference in not only your life and atmosphere, but others as well.
