MODULE 9 - FEDERALLY MANDATED TRAINING

In order for Rocky Vista University to remain in compliance with federally mandated training and to maintain a safe and inclusive campus, all students are required to complete the following training. Please complete the training prior to the established deadlines.

Title IX Training

Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 protects people from discrimination based on gender in any federally-funded, education-related programs and activities. Title IX requires educational institutions to provide students and employees with an environment safe from sexual misconduct, such as sexual harassment and sexual violence.

Rocky Vista University is committed to providing a safe and inclusive academic environment, including ensuring that all students and employees are trained on the protections afforded to them by these regulations. We have partnered with Safe Colleges to provide this mandatory training.

Notifications for COM will be send on July 17 to be due July 31st (2 weeks to complete).

HIPAA & OSHA Training

All students and employees involved in health sciences curriculum, research, and clinical courses at Rocky Vista University must complete a training course over the privacy laws which apply to the Health Professions to meet requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

HIPAA requirements mandate that a covered entity provide training to all members of its institution about the institution’s “privacy policies and procedures with respect to protected health information…as necessary and appropriate for the members of the workforce to carry out their function within the covered entity” [45 CFR 164.530(b)(1)].  This Rule defines “workforce” as “employees, volunteers, trainees, students, and other persons whose conduct, in the performance of work for a covered entity, is under the direct control of such entity, whether or not they are paid by the covered entity” [45 CFR  160.103].

All students and employees at risk of bloodborne pathogens exposure must also complete basic training and annual refresher courses in biosafety (bloodborne pathogens and universal precautions), as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).  Under the Rule, the definition of “Trainees” includes medical students, residents, and other health professions students and employees.

Because patient contact and/or hands-on learning is a required part of the RVU’s curriculum, all RVU students must complete OSHA training. The avenue chosen for completion of this training is the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI), provided through the University of Miami.

Notifications for COM will be send on July 17 to be due July 31st (2 weeks to complete).

Title IX protects members of educational institutions from gender discrimination and sexual misconduct. Title IX is important because it offers a safe space for learning and working; if a student or employee has to worry about their sexual safety, their constant distress will make learning or engaging in activities difficult or impossible.
If you have a Title IX concern you can contact the Title IX Coordinator.

Title IX, for me, protects my rights as a woman. This means myself and my peers will never be discriminated based on our gender. I should care not solely because I am a woman, but also for my fellow male identifying peers. All genders reserve the right to be protected under Title IX so we may exist as equals in the same environment. Should I ever feel or ever witness discrimination, it’s my responsibility to contact Safe Colleges with any concerns.

Title IX is legislation that protects against gender discrimination in government funded educational institutions. It requires that schools create an environment that is free from sexual misconduct/harassment/violence. Having been in spaces where I have felt very uncomfortable and unsafe in the past, I know that it is not only mentally and emotionally taxing, but it is also incredibly distracting from performing daily tasks, whether that be studying or completing work. I am encouraged that RVU prioritizes creating a safe environment and has all students and faculty do Title IX training.

RVU has a Title IX Coordinator that can be contacted by phone or email, but I’m also sure that any concerns voiced to RVU faculty would be directed to the correct channels.

Title IX us an Amendment that requires institutions to provide all of their students and faculty members with an environment that is safe from any sexual harm including harassment and misconduct. We should care about this as it is significantly important for institutions to protect its members from any discrimination based on sex.

Title IX was an amendment that was added in 1972 to protect people from discrimination based on gender. This amendment also enforces that individuals on campus should be provided an environment that is safe from sexual misconduct. This amendment is extremely important in promoting workplace inclusivity of both men and women, helping to diversify the fields into which they are entering. This also puts into place a system to protect individuals who may become a target of sexual violence, assault, or harassment. If someone has a concern regarding Title IX they can contact the Title IX coordinator at 720-874-2481. They can also make an appointment with RVU’s Sexual Assault Advocate and Mental Health counseling services.

Title IX is legislation that was put into place to protect against discriminatory actions based on gender in education. As a woman who has experienced discrimination in my early undergraduate education, it is very important to me that each person understands this legislation and ways in which it helps provide a safe educational environment for everyone. I wish Title IX had been more explicitly discussed when I was starting out. It would have given me the power to speak up and speak out about the discriminatory actions of my professor against, not only me, but other women in his classroom. Since training is not yet available, I believe you contact Rocky Vista’s Title IX office to file a complaint or talk through your concerns.

Title IX protects people from discrimination based on gender. Additionally, it requires educational institutions to provide students and employees with safe environments.

Title IX protects students from sex based discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation and gender identity. This policy is important to harbor a safe learning environment for every one in the school. Victims of title IX breaches will have an additional distractor that will make it difficult for them to study and achieve the same level of success as those who are unaffected, negatively impacting their ability to provide the best possible care for their future patients. If you have a concern you can contact the Title IX coordinator whose contact information is found on the RVU website under the “Title IX” section or talk to a faculty member.
