RVU-MCOM to Conduct Mass Casualty Drill at Phipps Park Thursday, June 13 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

[June 17, 2024 | Billings, MT]

Billings, Montana- Rocky Vista University Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine (RVU-MCOM) is set to conduct a mass casualty drill at Phipps Park in Billings, on Thursday, June 13, 1-4 p.m. This crucial training exercise, involving students from the Military Medicine and Wilderness Medicine tracks, aims to simulate a rock fall scenario resulting in multiple casualties.

The exercise is designed to provide hands-on experience in managing complex emergency situations. The primary objectives of the drill include practicing effective communications; principles of Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC); and massive hemorrhage, airway, respiration, circulation, hypothermia/head injury (MARCH) interventions.

Students will showcase their ability to maintain clear and effective intra-team, patient, and external communications during a multiple casualty event. This objective emphasizes the importance of coordination and information sharing among first responders, medical teams, and external support units. Participants will perform thorough trauma patient assessments and execute triage procedures, highlighting their skills in prioritizing patient care based on injury severity.

The event will feature realistic moulage (injury simulation), enabling students to engage in high-fidelity training that closely mirrors real-life situations. This immersive approach is intended to enhance their decision-making skills and readiness to handle actual emergencies.

This exercise marks the final simulation event of the first academic year at RVU-MCOM.
