RVU Appoints Michael K. Young to its Executive Advisory Council

[June 9, 2017] Rocky Vista University (RVU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael K. Young to its Executive Advisory Council for Southern Utah.

Mr. Young, a graduate of Harvard Law School, currently serves as the President of Texas A&M, a position he has held since May 1, 2015.  His distinguished career includes previous positions as President and tenured Professor of Law at the University of Washington, as well as President and Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Utah. Under his leadership, Utah raised its stature nationally and internationally, becoming the nation’s top university in the number of new companies generated from university research.  The University also built over a million square feet of academic and research space during his tenure as President.

RVU’s Executive Advisory Council was established in January of this year to provide guidance and advice regarding community relations and other pertinent matters to the leadership and faculty at the new medical school, Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine – Southern Utah (RVUCOM-SU) located in Ivins Utah.

Members of the Council include Utahans and those with strong ties to Utah, who are leaders in their respective fields and communities.

“As someone who grew up, lived, and worked in Utah, I look forward to serving with the Executive Advisory Council of the new and uniquely situated College of Osteopathic Medicine in a rapidly growing and important part of the state,” said Mr. Young. “I am honored to serve on the Council to support President Adams in achieving his bold vision for enhancing health care education and delivery,” he said.

Additional members of the Council include: Timothy B. Anderson, JD of Jones, Waldo, Holbrook & McDonough, PC, in St. George; Chairman Eric Leavitt, CEO of the Leavitt Group in Cedar City; Donna L. Milavetz, MD, CEO of On Site Care Clinics in Salt Lake City; Stan Albrecht, PhD, recently retired as President of Utah State University; Richard G. Whitehead, DDS, former Administrator at Dixie State College and Southern Virginia University; R. Lane Beattie, President and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce; Mindy Benson, Vice President for Alumni and Community Relations at Southern Utah University; Warren A. Peterson, DO, dermatologist and osteopathic educator in Woodland Hills, Utah; and B. Grant Bishop, MD, dermatologist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Utah School of Medicine.

“We are very pleased to have such a cross-section of prominent and dedicated educators and business leaders to serve on the Council as we finally realize this significant new addition to higher education in the state,” said Clinton E. Adams, DO, FACHE, President and CEO of Rocky Vista University. “The addition of Mr. Young will further add to the expertise of the group and we look forward to his counsel.”

The new medical school will welcome 125 students as members of its Inaugural Class in July of this year. The Utah campus, which is currently under construction, will include a new 104,000 square feet teaching facility and also student apartment housing located on the 30-acre campus.

A community open house event will be held on August 19th.
