Days of Diversity Series Celebrates Culture Through Dance, Food, and Conversation

[March 22, 2019] The Days of Diversity Series is a semester-long program that seeks to break down cultural barriers while celebrating the diversity present in the RVU community. Students are engaged in a variety of activities that deconstruct cultural biases and integrate lessons from the series into their courses. By experiencing different worldviews and lifestyles through dance, food, and meaningful discussions, students train to be more compassionate physicians.

The series kicked-off at RVU-CO with "Dances from Around the World," in which students learned the steps to traditional and modern dances, including the Salsa of Spain, the Bhangra of Punjab, and Korean pop. The event was followed by the "International Feast of Flavors," which was held on both campuses. At RVU-CO, students sampled savory dishes and treats such as guava pie, chicken curry, and tamales. Those who contributed to the feast also shared why their dish is important to them. In addition to a plethora of homemade dishes, RVUCOM-SU created an interactive world map for students, faculty, and staff to indicate where they had been born.

After the new year, "Understanding the Healthcare Needs of Women" brought students together to discuss the challenges women face around the world when it comes to addressing their healthcare needs. These challenges include maternal and reproductive health, breast and cervical cancer, and domestic and sexual violence. During the last event, "Understanding the Cultural Influences on Mental Health", students presented on the mental healthcare stigmas and needs found in in other countries.
