New Medical School in Southern Utah Names Executive Advisory Council [Parker, Colorado – January 6, 2017] Rocky Vista University (RVU) is pleased to announce appointments to its newly established Executive Advisory Council. The Council was created to provide guidance and advice regarding community relations and other pertinent matters to the leadership and faculty at RVU’s new medical school, Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine – Southern Utah (RVUCOM-SU) located in Ivins. The RVUCOM-SU Executive Advisory Council includes men and women from Utah who are leaders in their respective fields and communities. RVU and South Metro Fire Rescue Conduct Active Shooter Drills for First Responders [November 15, 2016 – Parker, CO] Over the course of a week, Rocky Vista University (RVU) collaborated with South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) to provide training, called Active Treat Exercises, in Centennial. The collaboration between the rescue organization and the medical school began in July. Training Lieutenant Ryan Shelton of SMFR read research about simulation training which had been conducted by Anthony LaPorta, MD, FACS, Course Director of RVU’s Military Track. Mr. Shelton, on a whim, visited the RVU campus where he met the rest of the surgery simulation team. “RVU wanted to support the training because keeping SMFR well-trained in the event of a mass casualty event is very important to the community,” said David Ross, DO, FACEP, Associate Director of Military Track. Due to an increasing number of active shooter situations throughout the country, there is an urgent need for medical personnel to treat and extract patients from still-dangerous environments. RVU to Offer Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences Program [Parker, Colorado –May 25, 2016] – Rocky Vista University (RVU) is pleased to announce that it will offer a Master of Science Degree in Biomedical Sciences (MSBS) with the first class matriculating in August of this year. The announcement came after receiving approval from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the University’s accrediting agency. “We are thrilled to have received approval to move forward with the MSBS program,” stated Kathryn Pate, PhD, Program Director. “We are looking forward to the opportunities the program will bring to our students and to the University. The faculty has been working very hard to create an exciting curriculum that includes a great deal of inter-professional education, which will ultimately lead to the enhancement of all programs here at RVU.” The MSBS program will consist of a 9-month curriculum in the biomedical sciences designed to help strengthen the academic background of candidates who are seeking admission into graduate health programs such as medical school, veterinary medicine, dental school, physician assistant studies, or other professional or graduate level programs. RVU Announces 2016 Commencement Speaker [April 14, 2016] Rocky Vista University (RVU) is pleased to announce that Boyd Buser, DO, FACOFP, has been selected to address the Class of 2016 at the University’s commencement ceremony. Dr. Buser is a board-certified physician in osteopathic manipulative medicine and family medicine. He is the Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean at University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Buser has previously served as president of the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO). He has received several awards including the A.T. Still Medallion of Honor from the AAO and the Santucci Award for outstanding contributions to the mission of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. RVU to Open New Medical School in Utah [January 19, 2016- Parker, CO] – Colorado-based Rocky Vista University (RVU) will soon become Utah’s second medical school, admitting its first class of 125 students in the summer of 2017. The announcement was made by Clinton E. Adams, DO, RVU’s President and Chief Executive Officer, on Thursday, January 14th at What’s Up Down South-Southern Utah’s Economic Summit held at the Dixie Convention Center. RVU has selected Ivins for its new location. The school will be located on the northeast corner of the intersection of Center Street and 200 East on a 30-acre parcel of land at the base of The Big Red Mountain. Construction for the 107,000 square-foot building housing the medical school is scheduled to begin in March of this year. The University has also acquired the Snow Canyon Clinic to use as administrative offices and for future clinical practice. The Clinic will be used to interview prospective medical students starting in September of 2016. RVU is a designated Military Friendly® School.
