Clinical Career Advising

Clinical Career Advising housed within the Department of Clinical Education, is designed to enhance the process started in the preclinical years to help students prepare for fulfilling careers in Osteopathic Medicine. Clinical Career Advisors work in collaboration with OMS III and OMS IV students to provide career and residency guidance, strategic and data informed specialty advice, timelines, application assistance, elective and audition clerkship planning, interview preparation and resources.

Clinical Career Advising Support Services

Clinical Career Advisors assist students in exploring career opportunities in a data driven manner to align with their personal and professional goals. Advisors offer career advising individually and through various programs, workshops, and specialty interest groups. Our purpose is to empower students to make informed decisions about their future by providing comprehensive guidance, personalized support, and expert resources.

OMS III

In the third year, Advisors assist students to refine specialty options by incorporating data and resources to help make informed decisions:

  • Overview of the residency application process and timelines.
  • Collection and preparation of supplementary materials needed for residency applications.
  • Review residency competitiveness factors and decision-making strategies.
  • Introduction of specialty specific recommendations and requirements.
  • Strategic preparation and scheduling of electives and audition clerkships.
  • Networking guidance.

OMS IV

In the fourth year, Advisors assist students to enhance their competitiveness during residency season:

  • How to be successful during audition clerkships.
  • Selection and understanding of specialty and program specific requirements in alignment with qualifications.
  • Residency application support using data, trends and resources.
  • Finalization and submission of residency applications and supporting documents.
  • Guidance through the residency application process, program communication and selection, interviews and ranking.
  • Match/SOAP week support.
  • Transition to residency.

Clinical Career Advising Resources

Students are provided with internal RVUCOM and national statistics and resources to make informed decisions about their specialty choice in order to achieve professional and personal goals and develop meaningful careers.
